Korean School Grade Calculator
Based on the Korean school system (year starts March 1) and the 2023 international-age law. Enter a birth date — the current grade, semester, and next-year D-day update automatically.
How to Use
Pick the child's date of birth. Korean grades are decided by birth year — all children born Jan–Dec of the same year are in the same grade (the old early-entry rule was abolished in 2009).
Defaults to today. Change it to see the grade on a different date (e.g., next March). The school year boundary is March 1.
Current grade (elem/middle/high/university), age, semester (1/2 or vacation), and D-day until the next academic year are shown. Preschool children see D-day until elementary entry.
FAQ
How are Korean grades decided?
Entry year = birth year + 7. e.g., born 2019 → elementary 1st grade in March 2026. All children born Jan–Dec of the same year are in the same grade (after the early-entry rule was abolished in 2009). School year starts March 1 every year.
Effect of the 2023 international-age law?
Grade decisions didn't change — still by birth year. But schools now use international age (e.g., born 2017 → age 8, 3rd grade). The Korean traditional age (current year − birth year + 1) is no longer official.
What about the old 'early-entry' children?
The early-entry option for Jan–Feb births was abolished in 2009. Currently all Jan–Dec births are in the same grade. People who already entered early before then (some born up to 2002) graduate 1 year early.
How are semesters split?
1st semester: March 1 – mid-July (just before summer break). Summer break: late July – August. 2nd semester: September – December. Winter break: late December – February. The tool reads the reference date and labels automatically.
Does it cover university?
Yes — ages 19+ show "university 1st–4th year" or "graduated/working adult". Leave of absence, retake, transfer, and graduate programs differ per person; this tool only models the standard track.
